Community Projects

Urban Harvest is committed to community development through food security and education.

Bringing communities together through growing, harvesting, sharing , preparing and eating healthy food is fundamental to the real development of our people and our environmental resource base. Educating our youth to appreciate and care for our natural environment is essential to a happy and healthy future for us all!

We currently visit 5 community based edible garden projects every week! If you like what you see and you are able to support these projects with resources or funding – please contact us to discuss.

Shack Chic!!!

A few months back, Urban Harvest volunteered at Lisa and Sheppards Newly built house in Masiphumelele. Their house which was designed and funded by ‘Eternally Solar’ was made from sand bags to minimize energy costs to the environment.

Urban Harvest was asked to design and set-up an edible and medicinal garden for Lisa and Sheppard and train them in its uses and maintenance.

With the help of Lisa and Sheppard and kids from The Sosebenza Youth Centre we planted – wilde als, pelargonium, papino melon, oregano, thyme, fig, lemon, wilde dagga, bulbinelas, wild garlic, bay, comfrey, yarrow, sour fig, lemon grass, madumbis, mint, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, brocolli, leeks, bak choi, tat soi, beetroot, chinese cabage, celery, parsley, sage……the list goes on!
